Change the Way You S’more

S’mores are a classic campfire treat that combines toasted marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers. While the traditional recipe is a crowd-pleaser, there are many ways to switch it up and make this delicious snack even more interesting. Whether you’re on a camping trip, or sitting around your propane fire pit in the backyard, these new suggestions will change up the traditional formula to delicious results.

Play it Safe: Just Change the Chocolate!

If you’re not feeling super adventurous, one way to jazz up a classic s’more is by using different types of chocolate. Instead of plain milk chocolate, try using dark chocolate, white chocolate, or even flavored chocolate like mint or orange.

But, you’re not here to play it safe, are you? You’re here to change the way you s’more.

Be Adventurous: Change the Filling!

The marshmallow-chocolate combo is a tried-and-true classic, adding different filling ingredients to your s’mores can also add excitement to the snack. For example, you can add sliced fruit like strawberries or bananas for a refreshing twist. Other popular additions include nuts, such as almonds or peanuts, or even bacon or pretzels for a salty and savory take on the classic s’more.

So many other things can be added, many of which that already have at home, that’ll give your s’mores a tasty reimagining. Next time, try adding some of these:

  • Peanut Butter (also try it with Jelly)
  • Hazelnut Spread
  • Thin Mints
  • Lemon Curd
  • Andes Mint Chocolate
  • Hershey’s Cookies & Crème
  • Strawberries
  • Caramel Topping
  • Pineapples
  • Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups
  • Bananas
  • Blueberries/Blueberry Jam
  • White Chocolate
  • Cherry Pie Filling
  • Vanilla Ice Cream

Be Even More Adventurous: Substitute the Graham!

While the Graham Cracker is the reliable, cinnamon support that keeps the S’more together time-after-time, try swapping them out next time for these yummy alternatives to put your S’mores on:

  • Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Peanut Butter Cookies
  • Gingerbread Cookies
  • Sugar Cookies
  • Chocolate Graham Crackers
  • Pretzels
  • Keebler Fudge Strips
  • Rolo Mini’s
  • Donuts
  • Ritz Crackers
  • Pizelle Cookies
  • Shortbread Cookies
  • Eggo Waffles
  • Oreo’s
  • Teddy Grahams
  • Any variety of Girl Scout Cookie!

Reinvent the S’more: Change the Cooking Method!

To make things even more exciting, consider changing up the cooking method. Instead of roasting your marshmallows over a campfire, try using a kitchen torch to create a perfectly toasted marshmallow without the smoky flavor. You can also try baking your s’mores in the oven, creating a gooey and delicious treat that can be enjoyed indoors.

One of our favorite methods to make s’mores for a gathering is to assemble them all in advance, then wrap them each in a heavy aluminum foil. This will allow you to use your propane grill to heat and melt the marshmallow inside multiple s’mores in just minutes.

Another fun way to make s’mores is by using a waffle maker. Simply place a graham cracker, chocolate, and marshmallow in between two waffles and let the heat do the rest. The waffle maker creates a crispy exterior with a soft and gooey center, making for a truly unique s’more experience.

Can’t Decide? Do It All! Or Change the Recipe!

If you’re not sure what sounds the best (or if all of it does), why not assemble a s’more-styled snack platter for you and your friends and family? Pick out some of the ingredients that excite you from the lists above and try different combinations. Then, you’ll know what to stock up on for next time.

Or, you could change the recipe entirely and do something s’mores-inspired. Here’s a few of our favorite recipes:
