With the July 4th weekend quickly approaching, if you haven’t made plans yet you’re running out of time! Maybe you’re going to invite the family over for cookout, or, better yet, you and your brood have been asked to attend someone else’s backyard gathering.  Perhaps you’re simply looking forward to a quiet day of leisure, relaxing at home with the possibility of a trip to see the local fireworks display when the sun goes down.  You could, however, do something a little more adventurous and go camping!

The quad state area (MD, PA, VA & WV) is literally loaded with amazing parks and campgrounds, most likely just a short drive from your home.  But if you plan on packing up the tent, loading the cooler and filling the propane tank for your mini-grill, it’s best that you call to find out what spaces are still available.

Here’s a handy resource of some of the most popular camping destinations and how you can contact them:

  • Assateague State Park:  Located at the end of Stephen Decatur Highway in Berlin, MD this park is a favorite for retirees and families.  They do permit grills for your holiday hot dog cooking, but only self-contained or mini propane equipment is allowed.  Call 1.800.432.2267 for reservations.

  • Hagerstown/Antietam Battlefield KOA: If you plan on setting up camp over the holiday weekend, you need to make your call to 1.800.562.7607 soon.  A Fourth of July Spectacular is planned with crafts, activities and even movies (weather permitting) Thursday through Saturday night. According to their site, firewood is available for your purchase to build a nice, cozy fire pit to relax and enjoy your camping experience.

  • Ohiopyle State Park: Nestled in South Western, PA, this amazing state park offers something for everybody! If you’re feeling daring you can raft the Youghiogheny River, take in the beauty of the Ohiopyle Falls or take a tour of Frank Lloyd Wright’s amazing architecture at Fallingwater.

  • Harpers Ferry Campground: Located only an hour from Washington, DC and Baltimore, this campground will give you a new appreciation for nature.  Tubing, canoeing, biking, kayaking, even fishing are all available during your stay.  Call 1.800.326.7238 for availability.

However you decide to spend your holiday weekend; be it a massive grilling experience, camping in the great outdoors, or simply enjoying an evening fire while watching fireworks light up the distant sky, remember to be safe!
